Why now?
The Forerunner 70 and 170 replace the Forerunner 55 and 165, built on a completely new platform — the same OS that powers the flagship Fenix 8 and Forerunner 970. That means even the cheapest running watch now gets the same software updates as the premium models.
The community had mixed feelings about the price increase though. The Forerunner 55 is still available for under $200, making the 70’s $249 price tag questionable for some — especially since many argue the older Forerunner 255 still beats both new models in value.

The two watches are surprisingly similar — almost twins in looks and core features. Both have a 43mm fiber-reinforced polymer case, a 1.2-inch 390×390 AMOLED touchscreen, five physical buttons, 5 ATM water resistance, Elevate Gen 4 heart rate sensor, multi-GNSS, Training Readiness, Training Status, HRV Status, Daily Suggested Workouts, Garmin Coach, running power, Grade-Adjusted Pace, PacePro, and the full modern Garmin OS.

The battery surprise
The more expensive 170 actually has shorter battery life. Both watches use the same battery, but the 170’s extra sensors (gyroscope, altimeter, barometer) drain it faster. For most people 10 days is still excellent — but it’s worth knowing the cheaper model wins here.

Who should buy which
Buy the Forerunner 70 if you are a beginner or casual runner looking for a first GPS watch, want an AMOLED display without paying premium prices, care about maximum battery life, don’t need music or contactless payments, or want a brighter color option.
Buy the Forerunner 170 if you want Garmin Pay for contactless payments, want to listen to music while running (Music version), need open-water swimming tracking, use a cycling power meter, or care about floor climbing and elevation tracking.
Don’t upgrade if you already own a Forerunner 255 — it still beats both new models in value according to most reviewers. The same goes for Forerunner 265 or 565 owners. Also important: neither model has a multisport or triathlon mode, so if that matters to you, look elsewhere.
Bottom line
For beginners and casual runners the Forerunner 70 is the value champion — AMOLED display, 13-day battery, and the same software as Garmin’s top models for $249. Hard to beat.
If you want music, the 170 Music at $349 is the only Garmin in this price range that delivers everything in one package.
If budget is the main concern, check whether the Forerunner 165 is still available on sale — it can often be a better deal than the 70.
And if you own a Forerunner 255, just keep it. There is nothing meaningful enough here to justify switching.
